DARK BASED COLOR GENETICS

AGOUTI GENE - This gene affects the color BLACK only.

It is an extension gene associated with the BLACK Gene

But is not a color gene itself.

When present, it tells the color BLACK what to do,

basically.

The AGOUTI gene operates somewhat like a light switch.

When it is ‘switched on’ or present, the color BLACK is

pushed to the points only.

This is responsible for how BLACK becomes distributed on

BAYS, DUNS, and BUCKSKINS–horses with black points.

When the AGOUTI gene is ‘switched off’ or not present,

BLACK covers the entire coat, allowing the resulting

Quarter Horse colors known as BLACK, BROWN, GRULLO, BLUE

ROAN–all of which have solid BLACK as a base coat.

THE E GENE DNA MARKERS

If they have 1 (Ee) Gene than they are Heterozygous.

Ee will throw either A

Red Based Horse or Dark Based Horse 50%.

*********************************************

If They Have 2 EE Genes Than They Are Homozygous

They Are Either Bay Or Black Based

They Will Only Sire Or Produce A Bay Or Black Foal

*****************************************************

Than You Have The Agouti Gene Added To This

If A Their A True Black Based Horse

They Will Be Agouti Markers a/a

And If They Are Homozygous For The Dark Gene

They Will Only Have Black Based Foal.
